Our building

We have an amazing building for the children to learn and explore!

Little Birds Pre-school  is situated in it’s own building within St Mary’s Primary School gates on  ground floor, allowing wheelchair access if needed. We have our own kitchen, office, cloak room for the children and two large rooms in our indoor space. We are located in a quiet residential area. Children can access their own toilet cubicles within the setting and we have changing facilities for those in nappies. Our indoor area is lovely and open with high ceilings and lots of space for the children to play in. We have lots of resources which the children access daily including arts and crafts (e.g. sewing, woodwork, textiles, painting), role play area, reading corner etc. Our room has an area in the front which can be closed off for smaller groups to go into to further learning opportunities in a quieter area. This room also has our preschool pet tortoise ‘Gary’s home in it. We have lots of sensory lights and tables for the children to use in this area.

The main room opens up at the back fully with bi-folding doors  out into our covered outdoor area where we have further learning opportunities for the children. Our rowing boat, playhouse, construction blocks, wooden water chutes and tuff trays are usually out here giving the children lots of exciting resources to stimulate their interests. We can access the side of our building here where the children have use of bikes , wooden climbing frames, balls to name but a few.

In front of the building we have a fenced off garden area containing a digging area, vegetable patch, herbs, seaside garden area, bird houses, a pirate ship which we use with the children daily.

We often take the children on local outings as we are very lucky to be close to lots of lovely places in Swanage. The children often go to days park, the beach and the local market to buy local produce at the stalls. We also visit the allotments where we have a small patch on a local resident’s plot to grow herbs, fruit and vegetables with the children.

We have use of the main school’s facilities and have great links with the school. We often use the playing field for to play games, football or just a good run around. We also visit the school’s chicken’s to say “hello”.

Having access to the main school ensures that we have good links with the school and our children become familiar with the main school grounds and staff.

St. Mary’s Primary School

Our pre-school was established over 25 years ago. In September 2014 we  moved to High Street, Swanage located in St. Mark’s Primary School  and then in September 2021 we moved again to our  lovely building in Northbrook Road, within the St Mary’s Primary School gates. We are independent of the school and will continue to be so in the future.

We have a great relationship with St Mary’s Primary School and are able to use of some of the school’s facilities such as the playground, school field, and hall, which affords the children the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the school and its surroundings which is especially important for those continuing into St. Mary’s. We are extremely lucky to be located next door to the Reception class, the children often see the reception class children playing in their adjoining playground. We feel very confident in saying that this will lead to very smooth transitions for children going into the main school, although we are also proud and happy to be able to say that we have strong relationships with all the schools in the area for good transitions.

The size of our building allows us to accept a maximum of 28 children on any one session comfortably.
